sh vlan id...

i highly recommend paul browning's book, switch simplified...  i do not recommend, however, it's delivery method... there's something about cracking a real book open that gives me pleasure...  reading on the pc has never been a favorite of mine but i find i am increasingly doing it... also, reading on the pc i find more tiring...

this book is only avaiable with a kindle delivery... so i have to borrow my girlfriend's ipad in order to read it... that irritates me... if i must read on the pc, i prefer a local pdf; feels more like a book that way... chris bryant's ccnp ebook delivery is another irritation (but also worth the trouble);  with bryant's stuff you have to download the book with an application, access it through the application, and you are basically reading on line... not a fan of that either, but i prefer that to the kindle bullshit...

i understand the need to protect their stuff, but at what cost to the end user; decided irritation...

so in browning's book i bump into a command that i never use, and because i never use it, i'm going to foist it upon you...

it is sh vlan id x

i use sh vlan brie almost to exclusion...

sh vlan id x gives you more specific information about the vlan...
great...

dls1(config)#vlan 200
dls1(config-vlan)#mtu 1522
dls1(config-vlan)#end
dls1#sh vlan id 200

VLAN Name                             Status    Ports

notice i changed the vlan mtu... i can't think of a reason to ever do this...  like stp; why would you ever screw with the timers? dont do it...

dls1#sh vlan id 1

VLAN Name                             Status    Ports

---- ----- ---------- ----- ------ ------ -------- ---- -------- ------ ------
1    enet  100001     1500  -      -      -        -    -        0      0

of course the default is 1500...  leave it alone for God's sake...

this is all the shit you can change for your newly created vlan:

dls1(config-vlan)#?
VLAN configuration commands:
are          Maximum number of All Route Explorer hops for this VLAN (or zero
               if none specified)
backupcrf    Backup CRF mode of the VLAN
bridge       Bridging characteristics of the VLAN
exit         Apply changes, bump revision number, and exit mode
media        Media type of the VLAN
  mtu          VLAN Maximum Transmission Unit
name         Ascii name of the VLAN
no           Negate a command or set its defaults
parent       ID number of the Parent VLAN of FDDI or Token Ring type VLANs
remote-span  Configure as Remote SPAN VLAN
ring         Ring number of FDDI or Token Ring type VLANs
  said         IEEE 802.10 SAID
  shutdown     Shutdown VLAN switching
state        Operational state of the VLAN
ste          Maximum number of Spanning Tree Explorer hops for this VLAN (or
               zero if none specified)
stp          Spanning tree characteristics of the VLAN
tb-vlan1     ID number of the first translational VLAN for this VLAN (or zero
               if none)
tb-vlan2     ID number of the second translational VLAN for this VLAN (or
               zero if none)

Good lord...

vlan number is the only requirement to create a vlan... name and port membership are vital, but not required... everything else, well, you decide...
