disabled- what it says... bear in mind cisco may consider this an actual state... to me it's the absence of a state
init- what it says... an hsrp enabled interface goes through initialization as it comes up
learn - the hsrp enabled router knows nothing, but is willing...
listen- knows the virtual ip address but is neither active nor standby; it is listening for hellos
speak- sends hello messages and participates in the election of the active router
standby- has graduated to become an active router if conditions are met like priority, preempt and failure, and sends hellos
active- it is now forwarding packets; it has made it to the big's...
